Question/Problem Description
When executing an UPDATE statement to Greenplum, the mentioned error is thrown.

Error Message[DataDirect][ODBC Greenplum Wire Protocol driver][Greenplum]ERROR: Cannot parallelize an UPDATE statement that updates the distribution columns(File cdbmutate.c;Line 709;Routine apply_motion;)
Defect Number
Enhancement Number
Cause
This error occurs when updating a distribution key.
Resolution
This is not a driver issue but a database limitation.
UPDATE SQL does not allow SET for distribution key columns.
Contact Greenplum to resolve this issue.
Workaround
To update distribution key columns,
  1. Identify the rows of data with distribution key columns that the user intends to update
  2. DELETE these rows of data
  3. INSERT the data with the updated values for the distribution key columns
