Yes it is possible to validate an edifact message without conversion to XML.

DataDirect XML Converters for Java, User’s Guide and Reference, example 13 in our documentation shows how to use a stream reader to process an EDI document without actually writing the converted output. It validates and just prints a count of the segments processed.
