EnvironmentProduct: Connect for ODBC Oracle Wire Protocol driver
Version: 8.0
OS: All supported platforms
Database: Oracle
Application: All supported applications
Question/Problem Description
Getting data truncation on CLOB columns after upgrading the Connect for ODBC Oracle WP driver from 7.1 to 8.0
Steps to ReproduceThe application is not using the results of SQLDescribeParam to bind columns. The values for column binding are hard coded in the application.
Clarifying Information
Error MessageString data, right truncated. Error in parameter x.
Defect Number
Enhancement Number
Cause
The default value for EnableNCharSupport changed with the 8.0 Oracle WP driver release.
6.1 EnableNcharSupport=0 (off)
7.1 EnableNcharSupport=0 (off)
8.0 EnableNcharSupport=1 (enabled)

With Nchar support enabled, a CLOB column is described as SQL_LONGVARCHAR, and a VARCHAR2 as SQL_VARCHAR.
Resolution
Ideally the results of SQLDescribeParam should be used for column binding. Applications that have column binding values hard coded should be modified.
The CLOB column should be bound as SQL_LONGVARCHAR, and a VARCHAR2 column should be bound  as SQL_VARCHAR.

Workaround
Set EnableNcharSupport=0
Note the EnableNCharSupport option is going to be deprecated. Changing the way the application is binding columns is the best approach.
