Question/Problem Description
The below error occurs when inserting NULL in a varbinary(max) column.
Steps to Reproduce
Clarifying Information
1. Create the following table: 

create table testg(col1 varbinary(max))

2. Insert the NULL value with this code:

String sql = "insert into testg values(?)";
st = conn.prepareStatement(sql);
st.setObject(1, null);


3. The error is seen.
Error Message[DataDirect][SQLServer JDBC Driver][SQLServer]Implicit conversion from data type nvarchar to varbinary(max) is not allowed. Use the CONVERT function to run this query.

Resolution
The error is caused by the database, not the driver (the error is not seen when for example connecting to an Oracle database).

No error is seen when also specifying a targetSqlType (-3 is java.sql.Types.VARBINARY):

String sql = "insert into testg values(?)";
st = conn.prepareStatement(sql);
st.setObject(1, null, -3);
