URL NameRequested-conversion-is-not-supported-occurs-after-installing-Oracle-Service-Cloud-patch-7-16-0145
Article Number000171957
EnvironmentProduct: Connect for ODBC Oracle Service Cloud driver
Version: 7.1.6.0145
OS: Windows
Database: Oracle Service Cloud
Application: SQL Server Linked Server
Question/Problem Description
Requested conversion is not supported occurs after installing the Connect for ODBC Oracle Service Cloud patch 7.16.0145
Steps to Reproduce
Clarifying Information
Linked Servers work by translating data from the external source to native SQL Server types, and returning them as a native SQL Server result set. This involves mapping of SQL-Types to native SQL Server types. In this instance the size of this column (4003) is making the linked server to return the error. If this column were  <= 4000, then there would not be any problem.

The SQL type for this column is SQL_WVARCHAR and it will be mapped to native SQL server type as nvarchar which has has a maximum described size of 4000 characters. Selecting anything described larger results in "Requested conversion not supported.
Error Message
Defect Number
Enhancement Number
Cause
Irrespective of how the column type is described (SQL_WVARCHAR or SQL_WLONGVARCHAR), for sizes > 4000, SQL Server Linked Server is not able to handle the fetched data which is successfully returned from the ODBC driver.
Resolution
Workaround
Notes
So, one solution is to make the max size for SQL_WVARCHAR as 4000 and describe these types as 4000 though the actual size is more than 4000. This may result in data truncation if the actual data is more than 4000. We can make this through some connect option.

This solution would be considered a driver enhancement.
