Question/Problem Description
Slow performance using getColumns to retreive column information
Steps to Reproduce
Clarifying Information

Defect Number
Enhancement Number
Cause
When using getColumns the query must be evaluated by the server and a result set sent to the client. The result set will contain x number of rows for x number of columns in the table.
Resolution
Avoid using getColumns to determine characteristics about a table. Instead, use a dummy query with getMetadata. When using getMetadata with a dummy query, the statement is only prepared and never executed. A significant performance increase should be noted.
