Cause
The Teradata character set is configured as UTF-16.
The application has a validation procedure check of the datatypes against a list of supported datatypes. This list didn't include the "VARCHAR() CHARACTER SET UNICODE" datatype hence filtered out the VARCHAR columns.
Resolution
This is an application issue.
