There is no specific authentication between the driver and the SQL Engine server. The connection to the SQL Engine server does require that the connection to Salesforce be created to fully establish the connection. The Salesforce connection does require authentication.

So, even in the unlikely case of unintended access to the SQL Engine, the requirement of authentication to the Salesforce server still serves as the security measure for connection.
