Question/Problem Description

Oracle error when updating a string and date in a single update query and the string contains '--'

Steps to ReproduceCreate the following Table in Oracle 12c database.

CREATE TABLE FOO (ID NUMBER, STARTDATE DATE, BAR VARCHAR2(255 BYTE))

Execute the following insert query

INSERT INTO FOO(ID) VALUES (1)

The following update statement fails:

UPDATE FOO SET BAR='--abc', StartDate={ts '2019-10-23 04:00:00'} WHERE ID=1

Execute two separate updates then it works successfully

UPDATE FOO SET StartDate={ts '2019-10-23 04:00:00'} WHERE ID=1
UPDATE FOO SET BAR='--abc' WHERE ID=1

Cause
The exact cause is not known at this time.
Resolution
Upgrading to Progress DataDirect for ODBC for Oracle Wire Protocol driver version 08.02.2208 (B0436, U0298) fixed the issue. 
Refer to "Connect and Connect64 for ODBC hot fix download and install instructions" for instructions on how to download and install the hot fix.
