Question/Problem Description
When an ODBC data source is near the end of a large odbc.ini file, connection times are slower.
Having the odbc.ini file on a remote file system makes connection performance even worse.
Connection times can be up to several seconds.

Cause
The exact cause is not known at this time.
Resolution
It was determined that the Progress Product is functioning as designed.
 
An enhancement to the product can be requested through the Progress Community via an Ideas submission.  Customer feedback is valuable and Idea submissions are monitored by our Product Management team.  Enhancement requests are reviewed during the planning phase of each new product release and a list of the enhancements chosen for implementation can be found in the Release Notes documents that accompany each release.  Once an Idea is submitted the Progress Software Community will have the opportunity to comment on and vote for the Idea.

Workaround
One or more of the actions below may help the connection performance.

- Move the [ODBC] section of the odbc.ini file nearer to the top of the odbc.ini file below the [ODBC Data Sources] section.
- Move the ODBC data source being used nearer to the top of the odbc.ini file.
- Reduce the size of the odbc.ini file if it contains unneeded ODBC data sources.
- Move the odbc.ini file to a local disk.
